Limits on Polarized Dust Spectral Index Variations for CMB Foreground Analysis

چکیده
Abstract Using Planck polarization data, we search for and constrain spatial variations of the polarized dust foreground cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations, specifically in its spectral index, β d . Failure to account such will cause errors cleaning that propagate into on cosmological parameter recovery from cleaned CMB map. It is unclear how robust prior studies data constrained are due challenges with noise modeling, residual systematics, priors. To clarify constraints variation, employ two pixel space analyses at >3.°7 scales ≈60% sky high Galactic latitudes. A template fitting method, which measures over three regions ≈20% sky, does not find significant deviations a uniform = 1.55, consistent determinations. An additional analysis these regions, based multifrequency fits model per pixel, puts limits σ β d , Gaussian variation The support up 0.45 highest latitudes, 0.30 midlatitudes, 0.15 low We also demonstrate care must be taken when interpreting current constraints, maps, simulations. Due systematics signal-to-noise ratios forecasts ongoing future missions should include possibility large values as estimated this paper, data.

Polarized Foreground Emission from Dust: Grain Alignment and MHD Turbulence
Aligned grains present a foreground for cosmic microwave emission studies. We review basic physical processes involved in grain alignment and discuss the niches for different alignment mechanisms. We show that mechanisms which were favored for decades do not look so promising right now, while the radiative torque mechanism ignored for more than 20 years looks quite attractive. We discuss alignm...
متن کاملGalactic dust polarized emission at high latitudes and CMB polarization
With recent instrumental advances, it might become possible to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), e.g. by future space missions like MAP and Planck Surveyor. In this paper, we estimate the dust polarized emission in our galaxy which is the major foreground to cope with for measuring the CMB polarization in the Wien part of CMB spectrum. We model the dust polarize...
متن کاملSimulations of Foreground Effects for CMB Polarization
We use a simple model to investigate the effect of polarized Galactic foreground emission on the ability of planned CMB missions to detect and model CMB polarization. Emission from likely polarized sources (synchrotron and spinning dust) would dominate the polarization of the microwave sky at frequencies below 90 GHz if known Galactic foregrounds are at least 10% polarized at high latitude (|b|...
متن کاملVariations of the spectral index of dust emissivity from Hi-GAL observations of the Galactic plane*
Context. Variations in the dust emissivity are critical for gas mass determinations derived from far-infrared observations, but also for separating dust foreground emission from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Hi-GAL observations allow us for the first time to study the dust emissivity variations in the inner regions of the Galactic plane at resolution below 1◦. Aims. We present maps of ...
متن کاملPolarized Microwave Emission from Dust
Polarized emission from dust is an important foreground that can hinder the progress in polarized CMB studies unless carefully accounted for. We discuss potential difficulties associated with the dust foreground, namely, the existence of different grain populations with very different emission/polarization properties and variations of the polarization yield with grain temperature. In this conte...
